n 1925 Chicago, Rose sacrifices her future to spare her sister a marriage to Andre Kaminski, leaving the mobster Gio she has loved for years. After Gio chooses her cruel sister Orla, abuses Rose, and causes her miscarriage, Rose finds safety and respect with Andre. Gio learns the truth too late. Rose rejects his final bid to reclaim her; he dies in a police shootout, and she begins a new family.
